So it's not as though she's rendered speechless, yet she CHOOSES not to use her safe word, which would stop him instantly. When he does, she's eventually crying, yes, but she's also counting along with him each time he whips her. She asks him to show her the worst it can get. She gives Christian every indication that she's willing, in every encounter. Give her credit for being an adult woman in charge of her own sexuality. But she's an adult woman who certainly knows her wants and needs (see the 'contract negotiation' scene to understand that). So if 'no means no,' can't 'yes mean yes'? Why are we expecting Christian Grey to read Anastasia's mind into a 'no' when she's absolutely saying yes? OK, she's a virgin when their relationship starts, and yes, she's a little naive for her age, and yes, she's a little shy. And 'unconscious' means 'can't consent.' This is what we want men to understand: Don't try read our minds listen to what we SAY. 'No' means 'no.' Not, 'Yes, I'm just drunk enough to like it anyway' or 'I'm so drunk I can't even speak, so that must mean yes' or 'Well, no, but I did flirt slightly with you so I must really mean yes' or 'No, but I was wearing a short skirt but I must mean yes.' It's simple: No means no. I find this rape-culture comparison disingenuous - well, no, actually, I find it downright hypocritical. Honestly, I just wanted to slap the girl and say, 'If you're really SO conflicted about this, just tell the man 'no' until you figure it out.' By going along with his bondage games while she 'makes up her mind' about signing his 'submissive contract,' Anastasia gives consent.

2) The book, told as it is from Anastasia's point of view, lets us in FAR TOO FREQUENTLY on her inner thoughts and conflicted nature.
